If I can assist in raising consciousness, (even slightly) through my Video Blogs, then they will have served their purpose.

“If we have been able to give happiness to a soul – even for a minute, it makes our life blessed.” Amma, (Mata Amritanandamayi Devi) – the ‘Hugging Saint’

A hug from a parent, friend, partner, child, etc. is one of the most magical touching gestures, that has perhaps often been taken for granted. Hugging may not be appreciated as much as it ought to, because it has become one of the many automatic gestures we perform, without perhaps really knowing its true value. Although it may leave us feeling warm and cosy afterwards…. do we really know what is in a hug?

There is always a good feeling after a genuine loving hug. Did you know that when you hug someone there is a hormone called oxytocin, released by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, (a pea-sized structure at the base of the brain)? This “cuddle hormone” is basically a neuropeptide that promotes feelings of trust, closeness and bonding.

Hugging is also a way of connecting to another, (which reinforces the fact that we aren’t separate from, but part of a whole) – therefore, when you are next hugging or being hugged, know that this touching gesture is one of the most precious gifts that you can ever give or receive.

There have been studies with evidence to say that a simple act of a loving hug can:

  • lower blood pressure,
  • reduce anxiety,
  • enhance self-esteem,
  • warm your heart,
  • decrease feelings of loneliness,
  • work as an excellent stress reliever,
  • provide an overall well-being effect, (physically, emotionally and mentally) -

The good news is that you don’t even have to ‘pay’ to give or receive a hug …..so the next question is; ‘Why aren’t you hugging more?’ …and if you are…excellent - you are certainly on the road to producing more of the ‘cuddle hormone’ that results in a happier, healthier, YOU… and if you’re not…then set yourself a daily target to give someone a loving hug and see how you begin to feel!

What about the person that you just hugged? They will also get ‘a hit’ of the cuddle hormone, which will result in you creating the ‘hugging effect’.

I had a wonderful opportunity recently, to get the most loving motherly hug from Amma, the ‘Hugging Saint’. Her heart is completely open and full of love, pure love and she can literally sit day and night offering compassion to the world through her darshan, (blessing) in the form of a loving embrace to those that come to hug her. It is said that she has embraced “more than 27 million people from across the globe in the past 30 years”.

The pure love that flows from her, to you (whilst hugging) is immense, (that sometimes can be quite overwhelming). This beautiful act of hugging is extremely powerful, and will almost always leave your heart feeling warm, radiant and full of overflowing love.

So why not create the ‘hugging effect’ today – right now, in this moment and give someone a genuine loving hug, leaving ...
